Book Stores Thinking Outside Of The Book

Some innovative new ways for the independent book store to compete with chains. I buy from both, but have not been loyal enough to the indies these past few months. I do try and make it a point to go to Green Apple Books when I can. I'd mention a store closer to me, but they ran a bait and switch on my last two orders.

Interesting. Have you checked out BookBeat since its evolution?

BTW, I'm headed to your fair city in a month. I'll have to get the latest and greatest recommendations from you.

As of late, I've only been through Fairfax in the city's parks or in transit. If I have been to BookBeat, it was most likely during the Carter Administration. The in-laws were here in February and we went to

My Father-in-law wanted to check them out because he heard that they had an excellent selection of used model boat and airplane books. I didn't remember there being a book store on that part of Polk St. and when we got there, I realized that I had been there two decades ago with my Mom.

E-mail me anytime you need food, shopping or sight-seeing recommendations on the City.

I'm all for the independent bookstores (my personal temple being Powell's Books in Portland, Oregon), but the allure of discounts and free shipping from amazon.com is sometimes too hard to resist....

Powell's always seems to have that hard to find title, and often is my next to last alternative to Alibris.

Budget concerns play with my loyalties toward local and independent books stores. Unfortunately, that will be their downfall as the corporations can wait them out.

The same thing already has taken down most of the independent record stores. Big chains, online shopping, and the added wrinkle of music sharing have all but killed 'em dead!

Bummer.

Gian Don,

Where have you been?

"I worked for one of the big boys for 4 years and hate shopping there. I do most of my buying online, but you can't beat the chains for volume

I wish you could."

I'd say, why don't we just shop at the small shops until the big chains go under. I'd also say things like, make me the offical leader of the Earth, but you could see where this is going.
